HRH Princess Elizabeth in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, 1945

She Gave Her Best

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of the House of Windsor was never supposed to have been Queen of Great Britain. Her uncle David, who had taken the name Edward for his reign, was very popular and would, no doubt and in due course, have children of his own. But Edward VIII had met an American divorcée who, ...

The Setting Sun in Paradise

It was a memorable event but not in the way intended. There stood the Prince of Wales, looking like he’d much rather be in Kent or Devonshire or Cornwall—anywhere but there. The military band played nicely but the honor guard wasn’t up to the usual perfection one expects from a British ...

The Limitations of Statues

New York City has always been considered something of an exception to the rest of the country. But even by that definition a recent decision by the city council to remove a statue of Thomas Jefferson from its meeting chamber was considered newsworthy. It was the latest attempt to expunge the ...

Fairly recently Australia agreed to purchase several French-made diesel-fueled submarines for its navy. It was a ...

How We Lost Afghanistan

In October 2001, a few hours after the American military landed in Afghanistan to avenge the terrorist attacks that had emanated from that country one month prior, a young British officer softly walked from his barstool in London’s Victory Services Club to approach an old gentleman sitting by a ...

The End Game

The wedding was marvelous, the weather superb. Crowds ten deep along the mall to Windsor Castle. An American bride for the warrior-prince. The pubs rang out with cheers “To the Royal Couple”! A breath of fresh air; the Brits are always up for a breath of fresh air. They gave us the Rolling ...

King Charles I of England

“By What Lawful Authority?”

In a few days, a trial will begin in the Senate of the United States to decide if the former President Donald J. Trump is guilty or not guilty of inciting an insurrection against the country he led for four years. It promises to be spellbinding. Millions will watch as the drama unfolds on national ...

The Year of the Three Presidents

Until the moment Donald J. Trump was informed that his successor had taken the oath of office, he was President of the United States. And what an ignominious ending it was. What began as an administration for the “forgotten man” terminated with a scorned man traveling to his palatial home with ...
