“China won World War III without firing a shot,” said exiled former Bolivian president Evo Morales from his Argentine refuge.

But such an exaltation of communist fervor can turn around at any time. Many scientists in the free world question the official Chinese version. The latest has been Nobel Prize winner Luc Montagnier, who maintains that the coronavirus accidentally escaped from a Wuhan laboratory while an AIDS vaccine was being tested.

Faced with such scientific doubts in the midst of the planetary pandemonium, one question burns like the wildfire that the Chinese invented for fun before Alfred Nobel turned it into dynamite: Will China pay the bill for the global economic crisis caused by the outbreak? This is not likely to happen anytime soon, because that would knock out the Chinese economy and they would return to the dream they enjoyed in Napoleon’s time: “China is a sleeping giant, let her sleep, for when she wakes she will shake the world.”

Today the dream has turned into a nightmare and no doubt there is something rotten in the state of Wuhan. The world demands investigation and transparency. If the coronavirus is shown to have been created accidentally by scientists, the consequences will be disastrous for the Chinese image and their bank accounts. If something even worse were to become apparent…better not to think about it. After all, Fu Manchu is a British invention.

Meanwhile Donald Trump insists, of course, on sending investigators to Wuhan to help clarify the origin of the evil, which he refers to as the “Chinese virus.” Whether it escaped from a laboratory planning to open a new Pandora’s box, or from a filthy market that violated all sanitary guarantees, the fact is clear: The virus originated in China. The opacity of the Chinese government in raising international alarms is also worrying, involving a delay that may have been criminal.

In any case, China must answer for its lack of transparency. And that’s why France, England, and Germany are already joining Trump in demanding China facilitate an international investigation to clarify the origins of the pandemic. We still do not know the position of Russia, which will be decisive.

Will we ever know the truth? Time in Chinese parameters has nothing to do with Western time. During a visit to Paris, then leader Deng Xiaoping was asked for his opinion on the French Revolution. The Chinaman thought for a few moments and replied: “It is too early to say.”

Chinese foodies have been eating bats for thousands of years, but a series of dire circumstances have to occur for viruses to jump into humans. It is logical that a certain suspicion has arisen from the rest of the planet concerning the eating habits of the virus’ land of origin. Also that many think it could go from the laboratory to the market. This is something that must be clarified, as much as the Chinese like to play at being impenetrable.

Lin Yutang said with some irony that in order to make a Chinese Christian, one must first convince him that he is guilty. Their philosophy is highly practical and emerges according to the circumstances, where they always look for opportunities. For the moment the Chinese government does not admit to any wrongdoing, quite typical of communists. They are dedicated to selling medical supplies worldwide with huge profits, but they also send experienced medical teams to help devastated countries like Italy.

The international clamor for Chinese responsibility will continue to grow as long as there are no clear answers. Evo Morales is wrong: No one has won the war, yet.

Fu Manchú en Wuhan

“China ganó la III Guerra Mundial sin disparar un tiro,” ha dicho el que fuera presidente de Bolivia, Evo Morales, desde su exilio argentino.

Pero tal exaltamiento de fervor comunista puede darse la vuelta en cualquier momento. Son muchos los científicos del mundo libre que ponen en duda la versión oficial china. El último ha sido el Premio Nobel Luc Montagnier, quien sostiene que el coronavirus se escapó accidentalmente de un laboratorio de Wuhan mientras investigaban una vacuna contra el Sida.

Ante semejantes dudas científicas en medio del pandemónium planetario, una pregunta corre como la pólvora inventada por los chinos para divertirse antes de que Alfred Nobel la transformase en dinamita: ¿Pagará China la cuenta de la crisis económica mundial provocada por el brote de peste? Largo me lo fiais, pues eso tumbaría la economía china para regresar al sueño que gozaba en tiempos de Napoleón: “China es un gigante dormido, cuando despierte el mundo temblará.”

Actualmente el sueño ha devenido en pesadilla y algo huele a podrido en Wuhan. El mundo exige investigación y transparencia. Si se demuestra que el coronavirus fue creado por científicos a los que la peste se les escapó por accidente, las consecuencias serán desastrosas para la imagen, los cuentos y las cuentas chinas. Si se demostrase algo todavía peor…mejor no pensarlo. Después de todo, Fu Manchú es una invención británica.

Mientras tanto Donald Trump insiste en mandar investigadores a Wuhan para ayudar a esclarecer el origen del mal, que denomina sin medias tintas como “virus chino.” Tanto si escapó de un laboratorio que jugaba a abrir una nueva Caja de Pandora, como si brotó de un mercado húmedo de animales que vulneraba todas las garantías sanitarias, el hecho es que el virus se originó en China. También preocupa la opacidad del gobierno chino a la hora de hacer saltar las alarmas internacionales, con un retraso que puede haber sido criminal.

Sea como fuere China se enfrenta a un ejercicio de responsabilidad por su falta de transparencia. Y por eso Francia, Inglaterra y Alemania ya se unen a Trump para exigir a China que facilite una investigación internacional para aclarar el origen de la pandemia. Todavía no sabemos la posición de Rusia, que será determinante en el campo de fuerzas.

¿Sabremos alguna vez la verdad? El tiempo en parámetros chinos nada tiene que ver con el occidental. Durante una visita a París preguntaron al entonces líder, Deng Xiaoping, su opinión sobre la revolución francesa. El mandamás chino se lo pensó unos momentos y respondió: “Es demasiado pronto para opinar.”

Si los gourmet chinos comen murciélagos desde hace miles de años, se tienen que dar una serie de nefastas circunstancias para que el virus salte a los humanos. Es lógico que haya un cierto mosqueo del resto del planeta hacía la tierra de origen del virus por sus hábitos alimenticios. También que muchos piensen que pudo pasar del laboratorio al mercado. Y eso es algo que hay que esclarecer, por mucho que los chinos gusten jugar a ser impenetrables.

Lin Yutang decía con cierta ironía que para hacer cristiano a un chino, primero hay que convencerle de que es culpable. Su filosofía es sumamente práctica y fluye según las circunstancias, donde siempre tratan de ver oportunidades. De momento el gobierno chino no reconoce culpa alguna en sus actuaciones, lo cual suele ser una característica comunista. Se dedican a vender material sanitario a todo el mundo con inmensas ganancias, pero también envían equipos médicos con experiencia para ayudar a países devastados como Italia.

El clamor internacional por la responsabilidad china seguirá aumentando mientras no haya claras respuestas. Evo Morales se equivoca: Nadie ha ganado la guerra. Todavía.
